19 - 22 November 2025 @ The ArtSpace, Artsavingsclub, Linden, Johannesburg
Medium: Pastel and Panpastel
Create Animal Portraits in Pastel
Whether you are interested in drawing wildlife or pet portraits, this workshop is for you. In this – the first of two workshops – we’ll focus on drawing an animal portrait.
Join me in a Pastel Pencil workshop with a focus on creating animal portraits. For this workshop we will be using Panpastel as our base for a detailed pencil drawing.
What you can expect:
We will start at the very beginning – from picking your reference image, editing composition and colour for your preference, to planning and creating your basic drawing.
We will discuss art supplies and the right tools and paper for the job, techniques for visually communicating light and simple tips for creating your initial underpainting in Panpastel.
I will share my process and techniques I have learned for creating a realistic drawing in pastel pencil, and even though our subject for this workshop is animals, these techniques can be applied to all subjects.
To this end we will work on techniques for creating realistic fur in pastel, tips on drawing eyes that seem alive, ears, noses and even a little about the colours I use for tongues and gums!
You will leave this workshop with your own drawing and we will also chat about packaging and preserving your pastel artworks.
My style is very informal and I promise this will be a fun jam-packed learning experience!
