Vultures are such unloved creatures – they almost embody death, but not as a strong predator, but rather the unwelcome visitor after the fact.  As I drew this Cape Vulture it was important to me to depict them as something more ‘friendly’ – another sunbathing raptor with a beauty of their own.  I have come to appreciate them more after this drawing, and have in the meantime taken some more photos which I hope to draw.  As with all other animals I feel myself discovering them and really seeing them only after I draw them.
